Cragganmore distillery takes its rock face of a name from the mountain in whose shadow it sits. And this is a whisky with many high approaches and hidden valleys of flavour. Known as the most complex aroma on Speyside, it must also be one of the most delightful because the distillery can’t keep up with demand.

A Cragganmore of this age has never been released from the distillery, making this elusive malt a much-anticipated expression. In addition, sweet and mellow woody notes emerge from this small-batch, patiently matured over 20 years in a mix that included new fresh-charred American oak casks.

Cragganmore is a highly respected Speyside malt founded by a giant among distillers, John Smith. The ethereal aromas are among the most complex to be found in any malt, appearing and disappearing mysteriously like the ghostly flight of the Barn Owl as it quarters the wooded Speyside glens at twilight in search of its prey. Showing the sweet and spicy effects of part maturation in new oak, this expression explores the woods just as deeply. The mellow nose is sweet overall, revealing fruity top notes of ripe pear, soft melon and green banana, then more savoury hints of soft glove leather and sanded hardwood. The texture is creamy-smooth while the taste is rich and not quite as sweet, delightfully balanced by a savoury mid-palate. The finish is long, velvety and spicy-dry.

Serving Suggestion:
A lively example of Cragganmore at natural strength, with considerable complexity, which benefits from a little water.
Region Speyside.
Appearance Pale straw, unoaked white wine. Good beading.
Body Light to medium.
Nose A mild nose overall, with light prickle. The aroma is initially elusive, both sweet (boiled sweets, apple pie) and savoury (soft leather, sanded wood), and with a wisp of fragrant peat-smoke. Ashy notes, as with a spent fire. A drop of water sweetens and mellows the nose further. Becomes more smoky in the development.
Palate At natural strength, pleasantly smooth in texture; the taste is immediately rich, sweet and savoury, then unexpectedly and appealingly becomes smoky. Adding a drop of water makes it really smooth, and slightly sweeter, yet it remains appetisingly savoury. The spiciness and smokiness still come through, and linger in the finish.
Finish Smoothly smoky, spicy and warming; lightly drying, with a lingering thread of smoke and a pleasing aftertaste. With water, smoother and longer. Leaves an intriguing memory of smoke on the tongue.
