Caol Ila is pronounced “Cull Eela”. It’s the Gaelic name for the Sound of Islay, which separates the island from Jura. For some, the distillery’s pronunciation is as remote as its location, sitting as it does on the rugged eastern coast, where it has remained hidden from view since 1846. However you say it, the fine, smoky whisky produced by generations of islanders is worth exploring.

A natural cask strength Single Malt from Caol Ila, an active Isle of Islay distillery. From refill American Oak hogshead, it's delightfully rich, with a fruitiness usually just hinted at in Caol Ila. A fine dram that’s even better with a drop of water.

Region Isle of Islay
Appearance Pale yellow gold. Moderate beading.
Body Weighty, with fast running legs.
Nose Surprisingly weighty, with a meaty backbone that doesn't rely on the distillery's usual smoke for depth. First impression is of lemon flavours along with green-leaf herbs and soft spiciness. A dry mineral then builds in the glass to add a chalky flavour.
Palate A fine line taste between sweet, acidic and salty. It slips into sweet candied fruit, then into intense salted caramel and toffee. Hints of sea-spray dance between the three flavours until the fruit and char unite in triumph.
Finish Warming, soft and long with notes of vanilla. Succeeded by deep warmth which fades to soft spice and oak.
